NEW YORK (AP) — After nearly two years of bickering, NBA players and owners are back on the same side.

“We want to play basketball,” Commissioner David Stern said.

Come Christmas Day, they should be.

The sides reached a tentative agreement early Saturday to end the 149-day lockout and hope to begin the delayed season with a marquee tripleheader Dec. 25. Most of a season that seemed in jeopardy of being lost entirely will be salvaged if both sides approve the handshake deal.

Barring a change in scheduling, the 2011-12 season will open with the Boston Celtics at New York Knicks, followed by Miami at Dallas in an NBA finals rematch before MVP Derrick Rose and Chicago visiting Kobe Bryant and the Lakers.  READ MORE….

Meanwhile, with the Celtics faltering down the stretch, the Chicago Bulls emerged as the conference’s best team behind the league’s No. 1 defense and an MVP campaign from Derrick Rose.

But Rose goes into these playoffs having yet to win a playoff series. The Heat still have questions about how well they can execute offensively on crucial possessions. And it’s not clear whether the Celtics can flip the switch like they did last year. Meanwhile, the Magic still have a star, a coach and a system that have won in the past, and the New York Knicks have the firepower to out-gun any opponent on a given night.

There’s no clear favorite to represent the East in The Finals, but the first round may be somewhat cut and dried. CONTINUE….

LOS ANGELES — Zig-zagging around stationary objects and passing balls into fixed receptacles is one way to demonstrate the varied skills required of the NBA’s most talented ballhandlers and speed demons.

But it’s not necessarily the only way.

Golden State guard Stephen Curry, the 2011 winner of the Taco Bell Skills Challenge at All-Star Saturday, wasn’t at a loss when asked if there were other tests that could be added to what he called the “unorthodox obstacle course.” CONTINUE….
