Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – The Philadelphia Eagles have secured quarterback Michael Vick to a six-year contract, one that will reportedly pay him $100 million.
The Eagles confirmed the six-year deal, and several media sources report Vick will get about $40 million in guaranteed money. The contract reportedly averages more than $16 million during the first three years.
Vick signed a one-year franchise tender contract in March, prior to the NFL lockout. The club placed the franchise tag on Vick before he inked the tender, which ended up being worth about $16 million.

Yao Ming appears destined to be an unexpected member of the next Hall of Fame class.
Officials of the basketball museum said representatives from the Chinese Basketball Association and media in China signaled plans to nominate Yao in the contributor category and bypass the usual five-year waiting period for retired players.
While there is no such thing as certainty in a balloting so secretive that even the voters are never revealed, let alone the results, Yao being nominated as a contributor removes the debate that might have accompanied his nomination as a player after an injury-plagued career. Plus, after announcing his retirement from the Rockets in July, he would not have been eligible for enshrinement until 2017.

The NFL has grown explosively over the past 25 years as TV revenue jumped 700%. The league’s 32 teams now divide $3.8 billion annually under the current round of broadcast deals, which expire after the 2013 season. With ratings at record levels, the next TV contracts are bound to be even more lucrative. Teams that were selling for $70 million in the mid-1980s are now worth $1 billion on average.
NFL owners claim they are not getting a big enough share of the league’s $9 billion in revenue, but a look at the world’s 50 most valuable sports teams shows how valuable NFL teams already are. The list is littered with NFL franchises–all 32 teams make the cut, led by the Dallas Cowboys, worth $1.81 billion. Yet the top franchise plays a different kind of football. English Premier League power Manchester United is the world’s most valuable sports team, worth $1.86 billion. CONTINUE….

Manny Ramirez is retiring as a player, Major League Baseball announced in a statement issued Friday afternoon.
The statement said Ramirez had “an issue” under MLB’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program and informed the league he is hanging it up rather than “continue with the process under the program.”
The statement, in full, reads as follows: “Major League Baseball recently notified Manny Ramirez of an issue under Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment program. Rather than continue with the process under the program, Ramirez has informed MLB that he is retiring as an active player. If Ramirez seeks reinstatement in the future, the process under the drug program will be completed. MLB will not have any further comment on this matter.” CONTINUE….

It teased you with six great games and traditional ceremonies on Thursday to start Major League Baseball’s regular season, and it continues on Friday with an 11-game slate, including the other nine openers.
The second wave features both reigning Cy Young Award winners and batting champs, the beginning of the final season for a Florida ballpark, the second 23-year-old California ace to make an Opening Day start within a 24-hour span, and a matchup between the last American League pennant winner and the club that most experts think will assume that role.
